The larger debate on how Hindu trusts should be managed and how donors and devotees can be a stake holders in the process of management is an important aspect. However, what is more critical at this stage is to ensure how the wealth that is locked up in Hindu trusts and is hostage to government control and corruption is leveraged towards socio-religious welfare programs of the Hindu society.

It is our hope that the seminar on 6th Sept, 2014 will go a long way in ensuring that the common man understands the implications that government control on Hindu religious institutions has had on the Hindu society and appreciates the potential of religious freedom should the Hindu society be able to manage its own affairs.

About Jijnasa:

The literal meaning of the word Jijnasa in Sanskrit is Inquiry. Jijnasa is a platform under the aegis of CESS, which is an effort to promote the quest for knowledge.
It is hard to obtain the company of the noble.
It is easy to obtain the company of the ignoble.
Pebbles are available in plenty; but it is hard to obtain the precious diamond.

India is not just a nation state but a civilization state. A civilization that prides itself for the spirit of inquiry, and is not based on a contrived belief system or historicity. A civilization that is firmly rooted in Dharma. A civilization that has much to offer and inspire the world.

However, our ignorance about ourselves is profound. It is therefore Jijnasa’s desire to invoke the spirit of inquiry, which can set people on the journey of self discovery. Its aim is to provoke and equip people to see things beyond the limited mainstream discourse on issues of national importance and seek solutions to contemporary issues facing the country.

It is important to understand ourselves before we can understand the issues around us. Enlightened individuals make for an assertive society, which has the womb to carry traditions along with modernity. Jijnasa’s attempt is to make fellow travelers discover the heterogeneity of the Indian traditions yet the cohesiveness that has stood us in good stead for several thousand years. At the core of Jijnasa, is the desire to build an innate ability to see the world from an exalted position, which is so essential for a country aspiring to play center stage in world affairs.

Sandeep Balakrishna

Sandeep Balakrishna has been an information technology professional for over 15 years. He is a regular columnist and commentator in mainstream dailies including the Pioneer, Kannada Prabha and on various online media like SIFY, Centre Right India and Firstpost. He has authored Tipu Sultan: the Tyrant of Mysore. The translation of Aavarana is his second book. He is also the CEO of IndiaFacts, an online commentary and fact check initiative to restore balance in public discourse.

Dr S L Bhyrappa

Dr. SL Bhyrappa is widely regarded as the greatest living novelist in Kannada. His literary career spans over 50 years in which period he has authored 22 novels, all of which have been translated into all Indian languages including Urdu. His works have run into numerous reprints, and continue to command a large audience. Dr. Bhyrappa's entire body of work has been the subject of numerous scholarly studies as well as heated public debates. His Daatu won the Sahitya Akademi award while his Mandra won him the prestigious Saraswati Samman. He lives in Mysore.

Atul Kothari

Shri Atul Kothari is the National Co-Convener of the Siksha Bachao Andolan (SBA), an initiative focussed on removing distortions from books taught to school children. SBA  is made up of volunteers: teachers, intellectuals, parents, essentially anyone devoted to a particular ideal of a culturally appropriate education, as prescribed by The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). SBA recently made news because Penguin Book India chose to settle a civil suit filed by Shri Dinanath Batra, chief patron of SBA, in 2011 against the publisher and the American academic Wendy Doniger.

Madhu Purnima Kishwar is Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) - a social science research centre, based in Delhi. She is the director of the Indic Studies Project based at CSDS aimed at the study of diverse faith traditions and cultures in the Indic civilisation. 

She is the Founder Editor and publisher of Manushi - A Journal about Women and Society published since 1979. The Journal is run by a non-profit trust. Kishwar is also Founder President, Manushi Sangathan - a forum for research based advocacy and active interventions to strengthen human rights, women's rights and the culture of social justice in India. Madhu also authored and co-authored several books on a spectrum of topics concerning Indian society and women.
