About Jijnasa

The literal meaning of the word Jijnasa in Sanskrit is Inquiry. Jijnasa is a platform under the aegis of CESS, which is an effort to promote the quest for knowledge.
It is hard to obtain the company of the noble.
It is easy to obtain the company of the ignoble.
Pebbles are available in plenty; but it is hard to obtain the precious diamond.

India is not just a nation state but a civilization state. A civilization that prides itself for the spirit of inquiry, and is not based on a contrived belief system or historicity. A civilization that is firmly rooted in Dharma. A civilization that has much to offer and inspire the world.

However, our ignorance about ourselves is profound. It is therefore Jijnasa’s desire to invoke the spirit of inquiry, which can set people on the journey of self discovery. Its aim is to provoke and equip people to see things beyond the limited mainstream discourse on issues of national importance and seek solutions to contemporary issues facing the country.

It is important to understand ourselves before we can understand the issues around us. Enlightened individuals make for an assertive society, which has the womb to carry traditions along with modernity. Jijnasa’s attempt is to make fellow travelers discover the heterogeneity of the Indian traditions yet the cohesiveness that has stood us in good stead for several thousand years. At the core of Jijnasa, is the desire to build an innate ability to see the world from an exalted position, which is so essential for a country aspiring to play center stage in world affairs.

Jijnasa Interactive on 28th July - A Backgrounder

Jijnasa is organizing an interactive session with Professor R Vaidyanathan on 28th July in Ramanarayan Chellaram College Auditorium. Details of the event can be found here.

Did you know that World Bank in its World Development Report stated that Community based informal credit networks created by those like Gounders in Tirupur were seen as more reliable than banks?

There are many more interesting facts which Professor Vaidyanathan explains in his seminal paper which was published in 2009 for Eternal India. This paper is one of its kind. This paper lists three major conflicts afflicting the world today and explains in detail how India should strategize in confronting these conflicts.

Speaker Profile:

R. Vaidyanathan is professor of Finance and Control and UTI Chair Professor in the area of Capital Markets at the Indian Institute Of Management (IIM), Bangalore His areas of interest are Corporate Finance, Investments, Portfolio Management, Risk Management and Pensions. As a visiting Fulbright Scholar in Corporate Finance at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaigne USA, he studied the credit rating me

chanisms of major agencies like S&P and Moody's. He has been a visiting faculty in many international institutes like Manchester Business School of England, Salzburg Seminar at Austria and University of Mauritius. He is a member of many high level committees appointed by the Security Exchange Board Of India (SEBI).

He has also published extensively about the role of Unincorporated Sector in the Indian economy. He has published two books one on the Non-corporate India and the other on Pensions-- facing the future. He is a regular contributor of views and opinions to many leading dailies on issues related to Economy and Finance. He has been a spirited campaigner in the fight against black money and corruption.

Speaker Profile:

Lt. Gen. (Retd) C.R.Sampath Kumar was commissioned in the regiment of Artillery in the Indian Army in 1961. During his service he took part in operations against the Chinese in 1962 and in the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971. He commanded an Artillery Brigade both in Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir where the Army was actively involved in fighting terrorism. He was a part of the Indian Army training team on deputation to Iraq for two years. He was also specially selected to be the Military Secretary to the President of India and held that appointment for three years. He held the important post of Director General, Discipline Ceremonials and Welfare in Army Headquarters for three years prior to his retirement in 2001. During his service he had undergone important Military courses in USA. He is a distinguished Alumnus of Defense Services Staff College (DSSC) and National Defense College (NDC). He is also a Post Graduate in Defense Studies from the Madras University.

For his meritorious and distinguished service he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), Ati Vishist Seva Medal (AVSM) and Param Vishist Seva Medal (PVSM) by the President of India.
